Week 10 Blog Activity 1, 2 and 3

1. Inquiry: Review a website’s design

The website I chose to review is The New York Times: http://www.nytimes.com/.

The New York Times is a news media website that presents news articles and videos on stories from all over the world, but primarily from the United States. I like this website because I think it is very functional and suitable for its purpose of delivering the news.

It has a highly professional design and its presentation makes finding and reading stories simple without distracting the reader. The main font used in stories is a serif style font, which looks professional and elegant and is simple to read. Title fonts are stylised and bold, which makes them stand out on the page and catch the reader’s attention. The website’s logo, “The New York Times” in a decorative font, reminds the reader of a standard newspaper and makes the website feel more authentic through this association. Black and white are the main two colours used on the website. The black text on white background makes the text very easy to read and functional. The colour use also works to make the reader associate the website with a newspaper.

Text and photos are contained in boxes, with plenty of white space surrounding the different elements. This helps make the text easier to read and keep different stories separated in the reader’s vision. The NY Times website is well-designed as it is simple and functional, calling to mind the older format of standard newspapers to the reader.

2. Practical: Review your blog

a. I think my blog is easy to read. It has a very simple and clean layout with black, sans-serif text on white background. Bold letters and links stand out very strongly on the page which should catch the reader’s attention. The headings used are very simple but are easily understandable for anyone involved with the course. All activities are located within their corresponding weeks, except for the technical activities (Quiz 1-9), which has its own post. the posts are formatted with plenty of space between pieces of text, which is usually broken up into short paragraphs.

b. All tasks have been completed and are on the blog. Comments and reviews of peers’ blogs are also on the blog.

c. This assessment wasn’t overly difficult for me, but it was very time-consuming. It is difficult for me to keep committed to any long-term project, so this blog went for long stretches with nothing going on. I was still able to get everything done on time though. These activities definitely helped me improve my writing from a journalistic stand point, which is great because I still find that difficult.

3. Technical: Blog review for technical errors

I have gone through my blog and edited my posts as necessary. Something I’m still struggling with is writing sentences that are too long. Otherwise, most of the things I checked were fine.

  1. You got yourself a good leading sentence, It sums up a fair bit of information all in one hit so well done. As a suggestion you could have removed the comma and incorporated the ‘primarily from the United States into a whole sentence. This would just look better for an opening sentence. Nice review all the same.
